Nuclear impact calculators use well-established physics models derived from decades of nuclear testing data. Our tool models the effects of a variety of nuclear and thermonuclear weapons.

Blast Effects Modeling

The primary destructive force comes from the blast wave. Overpressure (measured in psi) determines structural damage:

  • 20+ psi — Reinforced concrete structures destroyed
  • 5-20 psi — All residential buildings collapse
  • 1-2 psi — Windows shatter, moderate structural damage
  • Blast radius scales with the cube root of yield. A 2 megaton weapon has roughly 1.26× the blast radius of a 1 megaton weapon.

    Thermal Radiation

    The nuclear fireball reaches temperatures exceeding 10 million °C. Thermal radiation causes burns at distances far exceeding the blast wave:

  • Third-degree burns: Up to 13.5 km (surface) or 18.8 km (airburst) for 2MT blasts
  • Fires and firestorms: Can ignite materials across the thermal zone
  • Flash blindness: Temporary or permanent damage to eyesight
  • Radioactive Fallout

    Surface bursts dig into the earth, mixing radioactive material with soil and debris. This fallout rises into the mushroom cloud and descends downwind over hours to days.

    Air bursts produce significantly less fallout because the fireball doesn't contact the ground.
